No Fireworks Display this 4th of July

The City of Santa Paula will not be sponsoring a fireworks display this year as we continue to work to keep the City's budget in balance during challenging financial times.

Comments:
Smart move, but sad!

Very understandable. Thank you for the wonderful fireworks in these last few years, which could be viewed from all over town. Was nice. The difficulty now, as in past years with no city fireworks, is that there will be so many "backyard" illegal fireworks going on, irritating the neighbors, freaking out the family pets, increasing the danger for accidents with both people and structures and causing the understaffed police department to have call after call after call. Oh well, can't have everything. Thanks for the update, Wally.

If Santa Paula chooses no to have a fireworks display, maybe they should not outlaw fireworks in the city. Cause we're just gonna have more people going to Fillmore to light them off (except for the few who bring them to SP illegally) and most likely drink, then drive home to SP increasing the risk of drunk driving accidents.

Has a cost analysis been performed to compare the cost of fighting hillside fires from illegal fireworks, from policing the use of illegal fireworks to the cost of sponsoring the fireworks show? Is it possible the cost of the fireworks show is the lesser cost?

I am very concerned about these illegal fireworks landing on the very dry brush in our hillsides.

Their must be zero tolerance for
illegal fireworks.

this is stupid. it is our right to have fireworks. if the City pulls this stunt then me and my posse will go and buy fireworks in Fillmore and have our own fun right here on the Eastside.

This should not be something the city pays for. As an idea for next year, maybe our service clubs and other organizations would do a fund-raising. Make it rewarding, where the individuals with the highest totals (regardless of organization) get to designate a person (or themselfs) to receive some training from our FD and then get to light 'em off. Whoo-hoo!!

This is very disappointing. I am sure everyone in Santa Paula looks forward to the fireworks put on by the city, now you are saying it is cancelled. Will Santa Paula be the only city in the county to not have fireworks? Maybe we should have it written in the new City Manager's contract that the 4th of July fireworks show is a must. We have a family tradition to go watch the fireworks in Santa Paula now we are forced to drive to another city that managed to put on a fireworks show. We probably will not drive anywhere - try explaining this to all the kids in the family.

I would guess you could watch Fillmore's from afar.

Anon 9:28, Perhaps you would like to step up to the plate and pay for the fireworks show? These are some bad times right now, tough choices need to be made. It would be nice if the city allowed fireworks in a contained environment like a large parking lot(Vons)just for the evening!

No money for fireworks during these "challenging financial times" but, then again, they can give the interim city mgr a $12,000dollar raise?
Didnt they just give some the Golden handshake? They just should have been laid off like the rest and kept that money.

i understand that our financial situation is sad at this time, but im sure there are other things we could cut and even more sure that there is money being spent on things that it just shouldnt be spent on. as a community we should be able to celebrate holidays at least. i mean going up to the hospital hill and gathering with the rest of the santa paulans on this WONDERFUL holiday is part of what makes living here great. i do like the idea of allowing fireworks in large parking lot areas like vons or something of the sort. we need to have some way of celebrating this. without being allowed, this kinda forces individuals to go out and do it illegally. you cant just take the whole thing away!! this is absurd.

There is NO MORE MONEY HONEY....
The State is sending out I.O.U's
in lieu of payment to it's employees! Are you going to put out the forest fire and put up
the money for an "emergency" in
case some child gets his finger
blown off? Nay!

Is there a moral way to obtain
fireworks? If the amateur or
novice wants to explore that
option without jeopardizing the
communities safety, then have at it! My research has shown that
without safety precautions in
place, the children will get hurt.
